New Effective and Affordable Clean Energy Storage Plan- Based on Molten Silicon

Although the solar energy is one of the famous clean energies, however, it also has shortages like lack of stability and storage plans. Recently, the researchers from MIT have revealed a set of storage plan for clean energy based on molten silicon.

In the beginning of the idea, the new system is called “TEGS-MPV” and the core part is the molten salt battery.

The chief researcher Asegun Henry mentioned that the project has been created for a long period.

People thought the cost of this method cannot be compared to the natural gas. However, the truth is if the temperature is high enough, the driving force will be more effective and then lead to the final reduction in cost.

When the temperature reaches 538℃, the corrosion from the molten salt will make lots negative effects on the whole system. Thus, the MIT researchers tried to find a better alternative material to achieve higher energy density.

Finally, they chosen the molten silicon to make the storage and the heating temperature could reach 2200℃ and has other good properties.

The details of the system are published on the recent Energy & Environmental Science journal.
