In April of 2022, Sila Nano, an American battery material company, received a $170 million of financing led by Daimler. Siemens et al. Moreover, it has obtained an additional US$45 million in new financing from the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, with a total financing amount of US$340 million and the current company’s total valuation exceeds 100 million USD.
Founded in 2011, Sila Nano is a start-up company founded by former Tesla engineers Gene Berdichevsky and Alex Jacobs dedicated to the development and commercial application of a new generation of battery materials. Developed a battery anode product series with silicon as the main material, aiming to use this material to replace the traditional graphite electrode, thereby increasing the capacity of the battery cell.
According to Sila Nano, its materials can increase the energy density of lithium batteries by 20%, and are even expected to increase by 40%, and these materials are used in the production of new generation batteries, which have the characteristics of long service life, ultra-low expansion rate and high energy density. In recent years, Sila Nano has been looking for financing to develop silicon-based lithium batteries suitable for electric vehicles and technical consumer goods.
