In last blog, we have mentioned some mechanism on special properties owned by silicone rubber. It is since we have introduced some specific types of silicone oil, it is necessary to talk on other subcategories as well. It is since silicone oil has been categorized into so many types of silicone oil, thus we will introduce them one by one. Today, we are going to introduce more on phenyl silicone oil- another type of important raw materials to real industry world.
Basis of Phenyl Silicone Oil
Phenyl silicone oil is the product of partial methyl substituted by phenyl in methyl silicone oil. Phenyl silicone oil (or Methyl Phenyl Silicone Oil) is just like other types of silicone oil. It is usually shown as the colorless or light yellow transparent oil. Its flash point is usually over 300℃. The freezing point of phenyl silicone oil is as low as -70℃, and its relative density is around 1.00-1.11, its refractive index 1.425-1.533.
Phenyl silicone oil has good thermal stability, the gel time of it in hot air is 1750h under the high temperature of 250℃, and it also has good radiation resistance and high oxidation stability, heat resistance, flame resistance, UV resistance and chemical resistance.
Phenyl silicone oil is a kind of polyorganosiloxane with chain structure of different degree of polymerization. It is prepared by hydrolysis of dimethyl dichlorosilane with water to obtain the initial polycondensation ring. The ring body is cracked and rectified to obtain the low ring body. Then the ring body, sealing agent and catalyst are mixed together to obtain various mixtures of different degree of polymerization. After the low boiling matter is removed by vacuum distillation, phenyl silicone oil can be prepared.
It can be prepared from the hydrolysates of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, dimethyltetraphenyldisiloxane, and methylphenyldiethoxysilane through the polymerization in the presence of catalyst. It is used as a carrier for lubricating oil, heat exchange fluid, insulating oil, gas liquid chromatography, etc. It is used for insulation, lubrication, damping, shockproof, dustproof and high-temperature heat carrier. It is an ideal liquid damping dielectric fluid for electronic instruments.
Methyl phenyl silicone oil has higher viscosity-temperature coefficient, lower freezing point and flash point than dimethyl silicone oil with the same viscosity, and its compressive resistance changes faster in viscosity under pressure. Low-phenyl silicone oil has remarkable low temperature resistance, and also has fluidity at -70℃. With the increase of phenyl mole fraction, the high temperature resistance, radiation resistance, lubricity and solubility in organic solvents of silicone oil are improved; however, low temperature resistance decreased.
There are also some common ways to make the identification of phenyl silicone oil:
1. Eye observation: pseudo-phenyl silicone oil will be dirty, smelly and smelly;
2. Use fire to test: use a glass rod or iron rod dipped with a small amount of phenyl silicone oil to light it. The white mineral oil that can light and emit black smoke is white mineral oil. The pure phenyl silicone oil will not burn when ignited by fire, and it is odorless, clear and transparent, and non-toxic. The ignition point of phenyl silicone oil is 320 degrees.
3. Freezing point test method: Phenyl silicone oil will not freeze at -50℃, and pseudo-phenyl silicone oil will be dirty or frozen.
