Dimethylcyclosiloxane (DMC) is an important organosilicon compound, a mixture of dimethylcyclosiloxanes, with a molecular formula of [(CH3)2SiO]n, where n=3, 4, 5, 6, 7, which is what we call DMC.

Basic characteristics of DMC

The primary form of dimethylcyclosiloxane is an organic-inorganic compound with dimethyldichlorosilane as the main raw material, synthesized by hydrolysis, with silicon-oxygen (Si-O) bonds as the main chain and organic groups directly connected to the silicon atom. It is the main intermediate of organosilicon.

The molecular structure of the primary form of dimethylcyclosiloxane is cyclic, mainly including hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6), and colorless, transparent or milky liquid with a content of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) and/or octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and/or decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) and/or dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) of more than 50%. It is flammable, odorless, insoluble in water, and soluble in organic solvents such as benzene.

The primary form of dimethylcyclosiloxane is mainly used for ring-opening polymerization to form silicone oils, silicone rubbers and silicone resins with different degrees of polymerization. These polymers can be further processed into products and are widely used in various fields such as construction, electronics, textiles, automobiles, personal care, food, mechanical processing, etc., and there are also a small number of direct applications.

Downstream products of DMC

Silicone rubber has a wide range of applications due to its excellent properties such as fatigue resistance, high and low temperature resistance, and excellent electrical insulation performance. Its terminal applications cover electronic appliances, construction and building materials, aerospace, chemical medicine, photovoltaics and other fields. Driven by the "dual carbon" goals, the world's photovoltaic installed capacity has ushered in rapid growth. Data shows that an average of 1GW of photovoltaic installed capacity requires 1,300 tons of silicone products. Therefore, the rapid development of the photovoltaic industry will also drive the growth of demand for silicone in the photovoltaic field.

Silicone oil has excellent heat resistance, electrical insulation, weather resistance, hydrophobicity, physiological inertness and low surface tension, so it is widely used as insulation, lubrication, shockproof oil, defoaming agent for daily cosmetics and textile treatment agent.

Conclusion

Dimethylcyclosiloxane (DMC) is a multifunctional silicone compound that is valued for its unique properties and broad application prospects. With the advancement of technology and the growth of market demand, DMC and its downstream products will play an increasingly important role in multiple industries.
