Evonik Expands Precipitated Silica Plant in South Carolina, USA

Evonik recently announced plans to expand its precipitated silica plant in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The construction of a new production line is set to begin in mid-2024, with operations expected to commence in early 2026, increasing the plant's capacity by 50%.

 

Precipitated silica is a key ingredient in energy-efficient tires, toothpaste, coatings, and other products. Maike Schuh, Chief Financial Officer for the Americas at Evonik, stated, "North America is an important strategic growth region for us. Through the investment in Charleston, we are strengthening our customer-centric approach and improving our cost and sustainability position. Evonik is investing in innovative and green solutions and technologies to provide outstanding sustainable benefits to our customers."

 

Evonik has outlined a clear carbon neutrality roadmap for its Charleston plant. Emmanuel Auer, Head of the Silica Business Line, mentioned, "The commercial and technical teams have closely collaborated over the past few years to develop a robust expansion concept, which we are now going to implement."

 

With 18 global precipitated silica production facilities, Evonik produces precipitated silica grades such as ULTRASIL (tire rubber), ZEODENT (oral care), and SIPERNAT (food-grade) for various applications.
